
The International Conference on Trends in Investigative Journalism in Northern Nigeria, organized by North-Eastern University, Gombe, in partnership with WikkiTimes and Ghana’s Tiger Eye Foundation, concluded on a high note, bringing together leading voices in journalism, academia, and law to chart a roadmap for societal reform through investigative reporting.
The event was chaired by Dr. Sani Jauro, Pro-Chancellor and Founder of North-Eastern University, Gombe. In his opening remarks, Dr. Jauro praised the university’s commitment to academic excellence and its role in fostering innovation in journalism. He also highlighted the sterling qualities of Anas Aremeyaw Anas, describing him as a fearless and transformative figure in investigative journalism. “Anas’s dedication to exposing corruption and injustice through undercover reporting has not only inspired journalists worldwide but also engendered positive changes to societies,” Dr. Jauro remarked.
The conference featured a keynote address by Prof. Umaru A. Pate, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Kashere and President of the Nigerian Society of Broadcasters.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the most celebrated investigative journalist and founder of Tiger Eye Foundation, Ghana, delivered the lead paper titled “Radical Approach to Journalism: Case Studies of Undercover Reporting.” Drawing from his groundbreaking undercover investigations, Anas highlighted the power of fearless journalism in exposing corruption and driving social change. His presentation was met with widespread acclaim, inspiring attendees to adopt innovative approaches in their work.
Barrister SG Idris addressed the critical intersection of “Investigative Journalism and the Nigerian Law,” providing insights into the legal frameworks that support or hinder investigative reporting. His session underscored the need for robust legal protections for journalists.
A panel discussion featuring Prof. Wilson Joseph, Ibrahim Isah (MD, Gombe Media Corporation), and Ismail Uba Misili (DG Press Affairs, Governor. House. Gombe State) explored the role of investigative journalism in promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
A highlight of the event was the commissioning of the Anas Aremeyaw Anas Multimedia Content Creation & Innovation Centre at North-Eastern University, Gombe. The centre, named in honour of Anas, is set to become a hub for training and innovation in multimedia journalism. Attendees were also treated to a tour of the university’s state-of-the-art facilities, showcasing its commitment to academic excellence and community development.
Other notable contributions included a virtual presentation by Huraira Lami Sadiq, Head of Investigations at Daily Trust, on the “Role of Investigative Journalism in Facilitating Social Change in Northern Nigeria.”
The conference concluded with a visit by Anas Aremeyaw Anas to the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III CFR, who is also the Chancellor of North-Eastern University, Gombe. During the visit, the Emir proudly highlighted the university’s achievements, including its focus on functional courses, scientific innovations and training, and contributions to the development of humanity. He later treated Anas to a tour of the royal stables, showcasing Gombe’s rich cultural heritage through its magnificent horses.
The event not only celebrated the power of investigative journalism but also reinforced North-Eastern University’s position as a leading institution driving academic and societal transformation in Nigeria.
