MEET THE VICE CHANCELLOR
Professor Yusuph Amuda Yahaya is a Professor of Mathematics, an astute administrator and, by all standards, a scholar per excellence. His work career has been a good mix of multi-level administrative and academic engagements. He started as a mathematics teacher at the Okanle-Fajeromi Secondary School in Ifelodun LGA, Kwara State (1989-1990). He moved to Kaduna Polytechnic where he started as Assistant Lecturer in 1991 and rose to the level of Senior Lecturer in 2005. He completed his PhD in 2005 in Applied Mathematics, specializing in Numerical Analysis from University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. While in Kaduna Polytechnic, he was an ardent unionist as well at a time the Care-taker Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Kaduna Polytechnic Chapter. He was the Chairman, Pre-ND Mathematics Committee on Examination; Member, Committee to Advice the Rector on Union Activities among others. He later transferred his services to Federal University of Technology (F.U.T.) Minna in July, 2008 where he took up appointment as Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Prof. Yahaya, while at the FUT Minna, distinguished himself as a meticulous and hardworking academic as well as administrator. He was elected Deputy Dean, School of Science and Science Education (SSSE) (2009-2011). He was elevated to the higher administrative position of Deputy Director Academic Planning (2012-2015); and, appointed Director of Academic Planning (2015-2020). He was subsequently elected as Chairman, Committee of Directors of Academic Planning of Nigerian Universities (CODAPNU) (2016-2021).
His research works encompass: Numerical Solution of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, via Linear Multistep Methods (LMM), Runge-Kutta Method and R-k Type methods among other methods. For more than a decade, he has been working on both Linear and Non-Linear problems, arising from Chemical Engineering, Transport and Bio-mathematics. He is a theoretician who cares a lot about the practical interpretation of modeling and chemical reactions and who appreciates interdisciplinary research. The most prominent innovation of his research has been the conversion of some Linear Multistep Methods (LMM) to Runge-Kutta (single step) and uses it to solve both Initial and Boundary Value Problems. He delivered the 81st inaugural lecture of F.U.T. Minna, titled “Driving a Car without a Dashboard, Your Opinion is yours!”
Professor Yahaya has authored and co-authored more than 55 peer reviewed publications and in addition to his active involvement in the teaching of Mathematics courses both at the department and faculty levels. He has successfully supervised and graduated six (6) PhD. students, co-supervised three (3), and over fifteen (15) M. Tech. and M. Sc. Students. He is a member of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN), Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS) and Nigerian Association of Mathematical Physics (NAMP). He is happily married with children.
